Rock and roll found its first comprehensive expression on Alan Freed's "Moondog" radio show in Cleveland in the early 1950's. Cleveland rock and roll returned to national radio prominence in the 1970's when WMMS broke barriers and helped define the "progressive" format. The 70's were a difficult time for Cleveland: with the river and mayor catching on fire, and economic decline. Lending credence to the axiom that difficult times produce the best art, the 70's saw Northwest Ohio produce some of the finest music in the country with the Raspberries, The James Gang and Michel Stanley rocking with a classic heartland feel; and Devo, Rachel Sweet, Pere Ubu and a slew of others helping to define "new wave."
